High-Level Estimates are great theories, but they rank right up there with 3-walled shark cages, 4-fingered snakebite gloves, and cheesecloth condoms in terms of the protection vs usefulness they offer. High-Level Estimates are always demanded up-front, are given only minutes or hours to generate, yet are expected to be BRUTALLY ACCURATE, and certainly NEVER conservative. The actual detailed estimate is ALWAYS expected to be LOWER and SOONER than the magical high-level estimate, even though days and even weeks go into the detailed estimate. The Wise Consultant always accepts to provide only as DETAILED an estimate as possible in the timeframe provided, but NEVER agrees to provide a high-level estimate. To do so almost always ends in tears…
